IN 1946 Allan was discharged from the Navy and enrolled at Birmingham University to study Electrical Engineering. He was awarded a 1st Class Honours degree and stayed on to complete his Masters. Later he was invited to take up a post at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the family moved there for 18 months.
